In Memoriam: Jara Burnett
With deep gratitude, the League of Women Voters of Greenwich remembers Jara Burnett, past president, dedicated leader, and dear friend, whose life was defined by an extraordinary commitment to civic engagement and public service.
Jara’s dedication to the League spanned decades and was defined by her unwavering commitment to democracy, civic engagement, and good government. A tireless advocate, she championed voting rights, government transparency, access to education, and voter participation. She served with distinction as both President of the League of Women Voters of Greenwich and President of the League of Women Voters of Connecticut, guiding the organization with vision, integrity, and purpose.
In recognition of her profound impact, LWV Greenwich established the Burnett Award in 2019, honoring her decades of leadership and the enduring inspiration she provided to members across generations.
Jara’s commitment to civic life was deeply rooted in her personal history. Having fled Communist Czechoslovakia as a teenager in a courageous bid for freedom, she never took democracy for granted. That experience shaped a lifetime of service, not only within the League but also throughout the Town of Greenwich, where she served on the Board of Estimate and Taxation, the Representative Town Meeting, and numerous community organizations.
Jara led by example with intellect, grace, and determination, and inspired all who worked alongside her. She believed deeply in the responsibility of every citizen to participate in democracy and encouraged others to make their voices heard.
We are profoundly grateful for Jara’s leadership, her friendship, and her enduring contributions to the League and our community. She will be deeply missed, and her legacy will continue to guide our work.
